HISTORY OF TANG SOO DOO
The martial art of Tang Soo Do is relatively modern. However,
it’s basis includes mainly Okinawan Karate techniques, some Chinese
influence as well as techniques from the ancient Korean art of Soo Bahk
do, which records show was practiced in Korea as early as the Silla Dynasty
(618 - 935 AD).
It combines speed and power in it’s wide variety of long and short
range hand techniques, using closed fists, open hands and elbow strikes.
It also includes numerous kicking techniques, for which Tang Soo Do is
unsurpassed.
Through centuries of refinement, these hand and foot techniques have
been perfected to a high degree of sophistication.
Our traditional Forms have been handed down from master to student for
centuries, some being hundreds of years old.
Also included in our art are wristlocks, arm bars and various joint manipulation
techniques (hapkido) designed to control any would be attacker.
Therefore Tang Soo Do is best described as a traditional Karate and complete
system of self-defense with a strong emphasis placed on the mental and
spiritual development of the practitioner and teaching only practical
techniques which have been proven to be effective in real life self-defense
situations.
